Ami is a typical college girl. She's bright, friendly, popular and athletic, with nothing to set her apart from other girls her age other than the fact that she is an orphan, left to care for her younger brother after her father committed suicide after being falsely accused of murder. But while there is tragedy in their past, the siblings' future looks good, except for one thing. Ami's brother has racked up a considerable debt to another boy at school, and that boy just happens to be the heir to a clan of vicious ninja-yakuza. Ami's brother can't pay, violence breaks out and in the course of trying to avenge her brother, Ami is captured by the clan. They torture her and hack her arm right off. Ami escapes, barely alive, and is taken in by the owners of a machine shop who build her a customized, bullet-spewing arm. From that point, the quest for revenge is on in earnest.
It has been suggested that "The Machine Girl" is the movie Tarantino wishes he could make. That statement is probably true since unlike his 2003-2004 double feature "Kill Bill," "The Machine Girl" is far more entertaining. That's all the movie really is: entertaining. Heads are severed, a parent is drenched with the blood of his own son, knives are put through chests, arms are fried, fingers are cut offwelleaten, and there are enough flying stars to make any ninja proud. As all of these things occur there is uproarious laughter coming from every single person sitting in the dark movie theater.<br/><br/>One particular moment of hilarity was when the Machine Girl decides to fight people with a chainsaw and then chops her opponent in half, leaving the victim's corpse pulsating on the ground. Very few will be able to watch this film without laughing their heads off…which is of real concern. Is hyper-violence what we now turn to for comedy? Really? The Monte Python Knight had his limbs severed and everyone claims itan iconic moment in film comedy. Comedy is a matter of taste just like anything else, but if you can find one person who thinks that Monte Python scene isn't funny then you deserve a medal. Times have changed since "Holy Grail" came out. To get shock value one can just go to Google and look up two women feeding each other their own excrement; or American civilians being beheaded on Al Jazeera. Nothing shocks us anymore, and that's really kind of sad. Once more it's really disturbing that a group of people can go into a film like "The Machine Girl," see the debauchery and then exit the theater without having thrown up.<br/><br/>With the events that happened at Columbine and Virginia Tech perhaps we should start taking violence in cinema a bit more seriously. The Machine Girl show's consequences of violence. It shows blood, it shows guts…but then it laughs in the face of all that. People die horrible deaths in this film and we all laugh at it. Ironic? Maybe. Funny? Unfortunately yes.
In a nutshell (in case you have things to do): Girl's brother is tormented and eventually killed by a gang of bullies; chief among them is the son of a Yakuza leader. The girl is determined to have revenge (all the while dressed in school girl uniform, which seems to me to be a popular Japanese fetish, -maybe yours too, who knows).<br/><br/>And so the stage is set for one of the most violent and ridiculous movie I've ever seen. All of the comedy -and I do mean all of it- ironically comes from the violence. This is because it's so over-the-top, and the props sometimes so obvious (like a mannequin's head substituted for a human head in one scene) -you cannot help but laugh.<br/><br/>Finally, just to give you an idea of what you're dealing with, some parts of the movie towards the end looks like something that could have been staged by MAD TV or Saturday Night Live. This is a movie that knows it's silly (but "funny" silly, mind you) so I'm giving it six silly stars. Love, Boloxxxi.
